TMJ disorders and trigeminal neuralgia both cause facial pain, but they involve different structures and require different diagnostic approaches. TMJ disorders affect the temporomandibular joint, where the jaw connects to the skull, often causing pain with chewing or jaw movement. Trigeminal neuralgia involves irritation of the trigeminal nerve, which supplies sensation to much of the face, and can cause sudden, severe facial pain.
TMJ symptoms typically include jaw pain or tenderness, clicking or popping with movement, difficulty opening the mouth fully, and sometimes headaches or ear-area discomfort. Trigeminal neuralgia is often described as sudden, intense, electric-shock-like pain on one side of the face, frequently triggered by everyday activities like chewing, talking, or even a light touch to the face.
Because TMJ disorders sit at the intersection of medicine and dentistry, evaluation often benefits from coordination between our pain management team and a dental or oral health provider to address both the joint mechanics and any associated muscle tension. Treatment may include targeted injections to reduce inflammation in the joint, trigger-point treatment for surrounding jaw and facial muscles, and referral for dental evaluation when indicated. For trigeminal neuralgia, treatment typically starts with medication management and can include targeted nerve blocks to help confirm the diagnosis and provide relief.
